A Sweet Afternoon of Culture, Music, and Language Practice: Baklava Workshop at Kattilajuttelu!
At Finpolar Kulttuurikeskus ry, we believe that some of the best conversations happen over shared meals. Recently, our Käsiylös working group hosted a special session of its Kattilajuttelu cooking club, bringing community members together for a hands-on baklava workshop paired with Finnish language practice.
The day began on a high note with a soothing live violin performance, setting a warm and welcoming atmosphere for everyone present. Participants then rolled up their sleeves to learn the intricate steps of crafting traditional baklava. From carefully melting butter to layering delicate sheets of filo dough, every step was a collaborative effort.

Beyond the kitchen skills, the workshop doubled as an interactive language learning space:
-
Finnish in the Kitchen: Participants followed the recipe step-by-step using plain Finnish (selkosuomi), expanding their everyday vocabulary and food-related terminology in a relaxed setting.
-
Cultural Exchange & Teamwork: Cooking together provided a natural bridge for people from various backgrounds to share stories, practice speaking without pressure, and build meaningful local connections.
The afternoon concluded with trays of fresh, warm baklava and plenty of lively conversation. Thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed their energy, and made this gathering so sweet!
Kattilajuttelu is an initiative organized by Käsiylös, a working group under Finpolar Kulttuurikeskus ry aimed at promoting social cohesion, peer support, and practical language learning through community activities.
