Bridges Built with Ramadan

Building Bridges of the Heart: A Season of Unity and Shared Tables Across Finland

As the blessed month of Ramadan concludes, we look back with profound gratitude at a journey that transcended cultural, religious, and social boundaries. This year, under the guiding theme of “Building Bridges,” our community embarked on a mission months in advance to turn the traditional Iftar—the meal to break the fast—into a powerful platform for dialogue, friendship, and mutual understanding.

From the northern reaches of Oulu to the coastal beauty of Turku and the vibrant heart of Helsinki, the spirit of Ramadan transformed Finnish halls and churches into homes for everyone.

A Tapestry of Shared Moments

Across numerous cities including Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, Hämeenlinna, Turku, Loimaa, and Ilmajoki, we gathered around a single table. Whether it was a formal program with city officials or a cozy “potluck” where every guest brought a dish, the goal remained the same: to listen, to share, and to connect.

  • Helsinki – A Festival of Friendship: At Hämeenkylä School, Iftar Helsinki 2026 became a powerful testament to cross-cultural dialogue. The evening was graced by the enchanting harmony of the Kanun and Kantele, the spiritual peace of the Sema performance, and inspiring words from leaders like Sakari Rokkanen, who emphasized our sacred responsibility to build bridges between all backgrounds.
  • Empowering the Next Generation: Our youth-led Iftars, including special gatherings for middle school and high school students, proved that the future of dialogue is in vibrant hands. These “youth-to-youth” connections were particularly moving, as young people brought their friends and even stepped up as future volunteers, showing that the spirit of service knows no age.

  • In Oulu, three collective Iftars welcomed 179 guests, with 90% being our Finnish neighbors, in a beautiful collaboration with the local Cathedral and Tuira Church.
  • In Tampere, nearly 200 people gathered under the slogan “Kaikkien Tampere” (Everyone’s Tampere), celebrating belonging and social peace through music and dialogue.
  • In Jyväskylä, the night was filled with the sounds of a saxophone played by guests and a moving rendition of “Ievan Polkka,” proving that music is a universal bridge.

  • In Lahti, the program brought together diverse groups, including students and families, exploring the unifying power of the fast.

A Heartfelt Thank You

This mosaic of friendship would not have been possible without the synergy of many hands and hearts.

We extend our deepest appreciation to the local municipalities, city councils, and officials for their support and presence. Our gratitude goes to the churches (Kirkko), schools, and partner NGOs—including SKY, Finpolar, Käsiylös, Harmony Art, and Dialogue for Peace Ry—who co-hosted these events, proving that our shared values are stronger than our differences.

To the Hizmet Movement volunteers and local community members: your dedication was the engine of this season. We especially honor the women volunteers who spent countless hours in the kitchens. Your effort turned simple ingredients into “tables of dialogue,” feeding not just the body but the soul.

The Bridges That Remain

Ramadan 2026 was never just about the food. As expressed by our participants, it was about “breaking the glass ceiling of prejudice” and creating a “cascade of hope for the future”. From youth-led Iftars focused on the next generation to interfaith gatherings featuring six local priests in Ilmajoki, we have seen that when people meet face-to-face, suspicions melt away.

We leave this season with hundreds of new connections and a renewed commitment to our Finnish society. Though the month has ended, the bridges we built together remain open.

To everyone who sat at our table, served a meal, or shared a story: Thank you for making Finland a warmer home for us all.
